Review: Marsupilamis vrede

Marsupilamis vredeMarsupilamis vrede by Fabien Vehlmann
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The latest Spirou and Fantasio album is a trip down memory lane for us who have followed this series for a long time.

As you probably know, Franquin took the character Marsupilami with him when he left the Spirou and Fantasia series, and due to this it lost some of its shine (OK, mostly due to the genius of Franquin being replaced by the craftsman Fournier, but I digress…) and the character Marsupilami got its own album series that, despite well-made script and drawings, never really managed to take off.

For various publishing and copyright reasons, there was now a possibility to reintroduce Marsupilami in Spirou and Fantasio again, and that’s exactly what Vehlman and Yoann are doing here. They make a so-called retcon and explain all these years Marsupilami have been lost without our heroes seemingly being bothered, and this works surprisingly well. OK, it’s a bit like when Bobby stepped out of the shower in Dallas (Google it, those you who are too young for that reference…) but it is enjoyable and the narrative is reasonably believable (for a humorous adventure comic featuring a mythical creatures that is).

The eternal child in me rejoiced when reading this of course, but I wonder what a real young reader understands of this cryptic album. Fortunately, the publisher added a history of the character Marsupilami’s history at the end of the book, which will hopefully send out the young person to discover a treasure of unread adventures.

I have been hesitantly positive towards Vehlmann’s and Yoann’s work on Spirou and Fantasio so far. This is clearly one of the better of their efforts, although I still think that the most interesting Spirou comics are nowadays created in the alternative book series Une aventure de Spirou et Fantasio par…
