Review: Blå blues

Blå bluesBlå blues by Raoul Cauvin
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Yet another album with Les Tuniques Bleues (or Blåfrakkerne as they are called in Danish). There are 59 albums so far, and even if the creators are aged by now it seems they are not about to quit producing an album a year, like clockwork.

Often these albums are enjoyable, not least for Lambil’s inspired artwork, but also for Cauvin’s well made scripts, which once in a while are actually really good. This was the exact opposite, though. Cauvin here sends the two main characters behind the front line, to participate in a more civilian reality. The ambition is good, varying the stories while highlighting social problems, such as a colored man whose job it is to push around a white officer in the wheelchair, who must remain outside the a ballroom due to his skin color, or that all privates are expected to stand around and watch as the officers have a party.

The problem is that this universality does not extend all the way. The album contains a pretty bad stereotype of a gay soldier, and even makes a jokes about him being killed due to being gay. In addition, Cauvin tries to write a couple of female characters, and this is something he clearly is not suited for.
