Review: Passio

PassioPassio by Daniel Ahlgren
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The fourth volume of Daniel Ahlgren’s Swedish pastiche of the decidedly American superhero genre. The story picks up where the last volume ended, with a cosmic threat in the form of giant “passion leeches” which the heroes have to stop, on all parallel worlds.

If you know your comics history the story includes lots of entertaining winks and nods, not only to the superhero genre, but in this volume also to underground comix, with versions of Gilbert Shelton’s Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers and Wonder Wart-Hog and S. Clay Wilson’s Checkered Demon, pastiches on the cover Zap Comics #1 and so on. Even your’s truly is featured in a parody of the Gothenburg Book Fair …

Despite everything that this volume has going for it, I am not quite as enthusiastic as I have been about earlier volumes. Ahlgren has in the true spirit of superhero publisher built an extensive fictitious world with innumerable parallel universes and alternate realities. I can still follow the slightly convoluted storyline, but I miss the ties to Sweden. The tensions that this aspect offered when contrasted by the superhero genre have now been lost slightly in all alternative worlds. Maybe it’s time for a version of Crisis of Infinity Earths, to clean up this bloated fictitious world and return to the essence of the story…
